Galway’s excellent Primary and Secondary schools are something to be admired, as are the City’s highly respected and internationally recognised third level institutions which produce academic brilliance within the city and county. As well as this, Galway’s tradition of being a dedicated bilingual City has contributed hugely to the level of Gaelscoileanna (Irish Only Speaking Schools) within the city and suburban areas.
The City has two internationally recognised 3rd level institutions, NUI Galway and Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Between the two, there are approximately 25,000 students.
This equates to 33% of Galway’s population when measured against the 2011 census results of Galway’s 76,000 residents. Galway proudly produces some of the highest skilled graduates in Europe, and this youthful population adds to the City’s already vibrant lifestyle and culture.
Galway City is host to other educational facilities including 27 primary schools (pre-high school), 11 secondary schools (high schools) and 3 colleges offering PLC/Higher education courses. Outside the education and training sectors, there are many other forms of community development programs available for both younger and older participants, such as youthreach programs, the Sandy Road Training Centre, Community Training Centre, Adult Literacy Centre, LGBT Counselling Centres, The Galway Diocesan Youth Service, Youth Information Service such as The Gaf and Jigsaw, which all run throughout the city and suburban areas.
